Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about hardwood flooring projects.

What is the difference between refinishing and recoating?

Recoating is a light maintenance procedure that adds a new layer of finish to a floor that is dull but not yet damaged. Refinishing is a more intensive process that involves sanding the floor down to the bare wood to remove deep scratches and damage, followed by staining and applying multiple new coats of finish.

How long does it take to refinish hardwood floors?

A typical residential project of about 500-800 sq ft takes 3-5 days. This includes time for sanding, staining, applying multiple coats of finish, and allowing for adequate drying time between coats.

Is the refinishing process dusty?

We use a modern dust containment system that captures the vast majority of airborne dust. While no process is 100% dust-free, our equipment significantly minimizes the mess compared to older methods.

When can we walk on our newly refinished floors?

You can typically walk on the floors with socks 24 hours after the final coat is applied. We recommend waiting 48-72 hours before bringing furniture back in (lift, don't drag!), and about a week before placing area rugs.

What kind of finish do you use?

We primarily use durable, commercial-grade water-based polyurethane finishes. They offer excellent durability, low odor, and fast drying times. We can discuss different sheen levels (matte, satin, semi-gloss) to match your preference.

Can you match the color of my existing floors?

Yes, in most cases. We are experts at custom stain matching. We will create several sample colors on your actual floor for you to approve before we proceed with staining the entire area.
